Recycle, Re-Use
Recycle, Re-Use
In this day of pollution and over-filled landfills, concern for the environment has never been more prevalent. Often we question what items can and cannot be recycled and where some items go to be recycled. In the following pages are some quick answers to some everyday questions about recycling as to what can be recycled and where.
Our first concern is to begin at the consumer level by:
Buying ….Only the amount you require.
Using…..What you buy. Add an extra coat of paint and save leftover product for future use.
Disposing…..Of leftovers safely and responsibly at your local depot.
Beverage Containers
All ready-to-drink beverage containers including; plastic, glass, drink boxes, cans and cartons can be returned for recycle. It doesn’t matter if its water, juice, sports drinks or soft drinks, wine or spirits, if it was sold in BC it can be recycled.
Beverage containers can be recycled at:
- Campbell River Bottle Depot
- North Island Bottle Depot and Recycling
- Willow Point Bottle Exchange
- Worldwise Recycling.
The usual deposit refund paid on these items are as follows:
$0.05…….For non-alcoholic beverage containers up to and including 1 litre.
$0.10…….For alcohol containers such as wine, spirits, non-refillable beer, cider and cooler containers up to and including 1 litre.
$0.20…….For all beverage containers over 1 litre.
Milk Containers
- Milk and milk substitutes of all sizes and types are not in the deposit system, which mean you do not receive money back, however most depots accept them for recycle.
Aluminum Cans
- The most commonly used individual serving container – please leave the pull-tabs on.
Other Metal Cans
- Any metal container other than aluminum; ranging from small single serve tins to large tomato and apple juice cans – leave the label on.
These items are baled, melted and back on the shelf again as cans within 6 weeks. This program saves an enormous amount of raw materials, it takes 95% less energy to manufacture a can from recycled material than it does to start with new material.
Plastic Bottles
- The familiar plastic soft drink and water bottles including coolers and some spirits. Containers may be clear or coloured – cap off – label on.
Other Plastic Jugs, Cups and Bottles
- Clear or tinted, opaque plastic and vinyl containers – cap off – label on.
All Plastic bottles are power-washed, shredded and washed again. The shredded material is then sold to other companies who pull, stretch and meld the shreds into fibre for new bottles and buckets. Recycling plastics uses 35% less energy than manufacturing new plastic.
Glass Bottles
- The everyday glass juice and beverage bottles as well as wine, spirits, imported beer and coolers, tinted and clear – cap off – label on.
The glass is ground down into small pieces called “cullet” and used in the manufacturing of a variety items; such as fibreglass insulation, sandblasting material and sand for golf course sand-traps, it can also be added to asphalt in the making of new roads.
Bag-in-a-Box and Pouches
- Large bags of wine in a cardboard carton, usually with a spigot for in fridge use. Both the bag and the box must be returned.
Drink Boxes and Cartons “Polycoat Containers”
- Aseptic drink boxes and coated gable top drink cartons.
These are hydra-pulped to separate the paper, plastic and foil. The paper is turned into pulp and used again in paper products and cardboard boxes. Thousands of tonnes of paper pulp are recovered in this process every year.
Electronics
An “Environmental Handling Fee” is charged on electronic devises at time of purchase. As a direct result of this fee, residents and professionals may drop off unwanted designated electronics without charge at selected recycle locations and be assured they will be recycled responsibly.
Electronics collected in British Columbia for recycling are sent to locations across North America, where they are broken down, all batteries are removed and the remaining products are separated into their individual components for recovery. The product is then refined, melted down and reclaimed as a raw material in the manufacturing of new products.
For your own personal security, please ensure there is no private data remaining on your electronics product prior to recycling. Electronics can be recycled at:
- Campbell River Bottle Depot
- North Island Bottle Depot and Recycling.
There is no fee back for recycled electronics. The program includes the following devises:
